VistA is a very large program. It includes numerous packages and plug-ins, 135 to be more exact. It has whole hospital medical records management systems, ambulatory medical record systems for the doctors office and health clinics and more. All these can be interconnected and built into one. Each installation therefore uses only those portions of the program that it can utilize and so each installation is customized to its its own requirements. The program was one of the first ones certified by CCHIT (certified in 2006), long before most other programs were.

As you can see, it is too large for any one person to learn it all. For this reason, the knowledge required to use the program in its various capabilities is distributed between a large number of people, and no one person can claim to be good at it all. For a USER, training of personnel becomes important and may not be available in its full scope from one resource. As an example the training required for a neurosurgery practice is different from a cardiology practice or a Walk-In Clinic. Each will require a different kind of trainer. Additionally the training needs of a nurse are different than a physician or a medical technologist. All these trainings are different from the requirements of the front office help and all are focused to support seamless functionality so that medical services can be delivered in a more efficient manner by the various providers.

Hospitals and larger practices have to constantly make changes to their EHR system as various doctors and nurses and other staff members are assigned changes in duties on a frequent basis. They may need Clinical Application Coordinators (CAC) on staff to keep their EHR systems properly configured at all times. These specially trained individuals are an integral part of a practice of medicine and patient care in nursing homes and hospitals. They themselves need their own continuous training.

In order to be most helpful to the USERs of VistA we invite all those who are CACs or otherwise knowledgeable and trained in any aspect of VistA to send us your  CV as part of your membership registration process so that they can be matched with USER members' requirements and effective training sessions arranged through the American Academy of VistA EHR Technology, Your Central VistA Resource of Excellence.

Training sessions can be hands on at an installation facility (hospitals, clinics and doctors offices or user arranged classrooms), conducted for groups or individuals, or by electronic distance learning and teaching methods.
